BOOK CURATION

So I curate books now! For people, for places, for projects, for fun. It’s not a total wild card. (Book curation, as it turns out, sits smack back in the middle of the Venn diagram between photography and writing, so it was no arbitrary thing to throw it into the mix.) I’ve done collections for private clients and public spaces, sourced reference libraries for designers and artists. Not in a Books By The Yard kinda way. I look for books that are not just visually interesting, but actually interesting and highly personal—the kind you’ll reach for and actually use. The sort of thing you’ll be glad is on the shelf one day. Very personal. Always beautiful! But never purely decorative.

I’m not an antiques dealer. I’m uninterested in dealing singular, ultra-rare books. Ephemera freaks me out! I’ll keep posters and letters forever, but it scares me when paper is treated too preciously—kept under glass and handled with gloves. I like books you can leaf through, live with, circle back to. The ones that may have slipped out of print but deserve a few more eyes on them. The gauzy film photography that hasn’t made it to Pinterest. The girthy serifed fonts of the ’80s. I’m drawn to how books sit together as a set—how they flatter each other visually, wink at each other thematically, how they become more compelling when arranged in context.

My approach is personal and intuitive, grounded in years of working with books as a photographer, stylist, writer, and collector. I think about rhythm and color, but also tone, mood, and voice. I work with publishers, rare book dealers, scour auctions and independent stores in order to find otherwise overlooked titles. And I could do that for you, too!
